Enrico Pontelli

Enrico Pontelli is the Head of the Computer Science Department at New Mexico State University, as well as the Director of the NSF-funded Center of Research Excellence in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. He leads several educational and outreach programs, including the Young Women in Computing program, the DIScovering SciEnce through Computational Thinking (DISSECT) program, and he is the New Mexico State University representative for the Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI). He has designed and led several outreach programs aimed at engaging students from traditionally underrepresented groups in computing, with particular focus on women and students of Hispanic and Native American heritage.

He received a doctorate degree in Computer Science in 1997 and has since been serving as a faculty member at New Mexico State University. He has conducted extensive research in several areas of Computer Science, including Artificial Intelligence, High Performance Computing, Bioinformatics and Assistive Technologies. He is the recipient of a NSF Career Award and his research has been supported over the years by several agencies, such as the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health, and the Department of Education.
