DIVA STEAM Program

The DIVA STEAM (Science,Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) will train girls in underserved communities in Central Brooklyn to be the future technologists and creationists for social change in the future. DIVAS  (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice is a grassroots arts organization that encourages girls in under-served communities in Brooklyn, New York to get involved in technology and create socially conscious media that gives voice to their communities. DIVAS is seeking funds to create, "The DIVA STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Math) Program. DIVAS would like to provide a free program to our youth which will train them in robotics and computer programming and application design which will incorporate digital media for social change. In November of 2012, DIVAS was able to launch a pilot robotics program. Professor Andrea Taylor, a Information Technology Professor of Pace University volunteered her time to train youth ages 7-9 in robotics in hopes to groom a robotics team for the organization. The pilot robotics team decided collectively to create a robot that would bring awareness about climate change after their New York City communities were affected by Hurricane Sandy. During the pilot launch of the robotics team, the organization realized the lack of access the youth they serve have to robotics programming and learning coding. The goal of the DIVA STEAM Program is to encourage youth in under-served communities to become the innovators and technologists of tomorrow by incorporating the arts which allows youth to not just utilize the left side of their brain (STEM) but the right as well (ARTS). DIVAS believes there can be no innovation without the incorporation of the Arts in STEM Programming. The DIVA STEAM Program will run for 12 weeks wants to provide free programming to youth in Bedford Stuyvesant, the purchase of software, transportation expenses and to train 15 youth ages 8-14 in becoming tomorrow's creationists.
